6 Helpful Tips To Reach Your Chill Zone

How many times have we heard this: stress is killing you? A little stress every now and then is ok… we are human and stress affects us all. However, chronic stress can cause many serious health problems including obesity, skin and hair problems, cardiovascular disease and depression. So yes stress can literally kill you.

Reduce your stress with one of my 6 favorite tips:

1) Coloring

Ladies and gentlemen, coloring is no longer just for kids! Adult coloring books are all the rage now for a very good reason: coloring reduces anxiety and stress. Similar to meditation, coloring allows us to switch off our brains from other thoughts and focus on the moment. Coloring Mandalas are particularly relaxing because of the round patterns and concentric circles. It also activates both parts of the cerebral hemisphere because coloring involves both logic and creativity. Personally I find coloring the best method to relieve my stress because it reminds me of my stress free days of childhood.

2) Meditation

According to psychologist Robbie Maller Hartman, PhD, a Chicago health and wellness coach, daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making you more resilient to stress. If you have never tried meditation or do not know enough to do it on your own, there are some great apps to unwind. Wired recently reviewed several meditation apps so you don’t have to go into your new meditation routine blind.

3) Crank Up The Tones

Like you ever needed an excuse to listen to your favorite playlist. Research shows that listening to soothing music can lower blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. Create a playlist of nature sounds and allow your mind to drift to a happy place. Not into birds chirping or ocean sounds? Blow off steam by rocking out to more upbeat music and dance your stress away.

4) Keep Moving

Deadlines. Meetings. Phone calls. Your workday is full of stressful situations and it can be hard to find a way to unwind when your day is packed with meetings. That’s why you have your Cubii. Scientists say all forms of exercise can ease depression and anxiety by helping the brain to release feel-good hormones allowing your body to decompress and relax. Pedal away your stress with Cubii.

5) Aromatherapy

Honestly nothing beats coming home, lighting some candles and taking a hot bath. While there are many health benefits to aromatherapy (memory, boost energy levels, headache relief), the most popular use is for stress relief. The aromatic compounds from the essential oils are known as relaxants and can help soothe your mind and eliminate anxiety. Some of the best essential oils for stress relief are lemon oil, lavender, vetiver and peppermint.

6) Chew Gum

Get out that spearmint and start chewing! In a study by Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia, levels of salivary cortisol (a psychological stress marker) in gum chewing participants were lower than those of non-gum chewers by 16 percent. Other positive health benefits reported were relieved anxiety, increased alertness and improved performance on multi-tasking activities.

Remember these are just a few tips for relieving stress and what works for one person may not work for another. Find what works for you and stick with it. Life is too short to spend it stressed out.
