Taking 10,000 steps a day can be a daunting goal for the majority of Americans especially if you have a desk job. In case you’re curious, 10,000 steps equates to roughly 4 to 5 miles of walking per day. But is 10,000 steps enough to stay healthy?
It’s interesting to note the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) does not officially endorse the ‘10,000 steps a day’ motto, but instead recommends adults get in 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (approximately 7000-8000 steps a day).* While 10,000 steps a day is a good number to reach, any amount of activity beyond what you’re currently doing will likely benefit your health. For example, if you normally get 7000 steps a day, make it a goal to reach 7500 steps in week 2.
Here are a few simple hacks to get you beyond that 10,000 step mark:
1) Park Away From The Entrance
Everyone has to run errands and it’s tempting to park as close to the entrance as possible. To get to those 10,000 steps faster, park further away from the entrance. For an even bigger step boost, skip the cart return area in the grocery store parking lot and walk the shopping cart back into the store. This is a very simple hack that can quickly add steps without you even thinking about it.
Bonus: you’ll limit the dings and scratches in the parking lot if cars aren’t close to you.
2) Hold Walking Meetings
Maybe your work day is packed with meetings after meetings and thus have no time to take a short walk around the block. If you don’t need a computer, simply suggest having a walking meeting. Not only will you benefit from the extra steps but the fresh air and sunlight will help you feel refreshed and energized. I highly recommend holding walking meetings in the afternoon when you begin to suffer from the afternoon lull.
3) Walk Around While Watching Your Child’s Sporting Events
There’s no reason your kid should be the only one benefiting from his/her Saturday morning soccer match. Instead of sitting down, walk around the field, walk the fence line or pace back and forth. Besides, bleachers and fold-able chairs aren’t that comfortable anyways.
4) Earn Steps While Sitting
Keep those legs moving even while sitting with Cubii, the first smart under desk elliptical. Sit at your desk and pedal for 30 mins to get an average of 2500 strides. You just knocked out 25% of your 10,000 step goal in 30 mins by sitting!
5) Take Your Dog For A Walk Instead Of Letting Him Out The Yard
It’s easy to open the door to let your dog out. Heck a toddler can do it. After breakfast or dinner, take your dog for an actual walk. Your pooch will see it as a mini trip and will enjoy the new smells. Drag your kids and husband or wife along to make it a fun family activity. You get to the 10,000 step mark and have family bonding at the same time .. Doesn’t get much better than that folks.
6) Get Off 1 Stop Before You Normally Do
Live in the city? This tip is for you. It’s very easy to find the quickest route to your destination, whether it be the office or coffee with a friend. Instead, get off one stop early. You get those extra thousand steps and who knows, you might even discover a new part of a neighborhood or cool restaurant to try out on the weekend. Have an adventure!
It can be addicting to check your step count on a daily basis. But don’t worry if you can’t get those 10,000 steps in all the time. The important thing is to just keep moving.
